Once overgrown, neglected and largely untouched for more than a decade, this unique site has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a forgotten space into a beautifully restored home and landscape, with thriving lawns across multiple areas now at its heart.

When the owners first took on the property, the challenge was clear. The land had fallen into disrepair, with uneven ground, dense overgrowth and no meaningful lawn to speak of. While the previous owner had carefully maintained the space from the 1960s through to 2009, this had understandably declined in later years due to age and health. Restoring the site would require not only vision, but patience, persistence and a significant amount of groundwork.
Extensive landscaping followed, including the installation of over a kilometre of trenches for a ground source heat pump and the careful preparation of more than 2,500 tonnes of soil. Only once this was complete could attention turn to establishing lawns capable of matching the ambition of the wider project.

Working with the team at Grass Seed Online, the owners sought guidance on both preparation and seed selection – a crucial step given the scale of the site, the varied conditions across different areas, and the added challenge of sowing later in the season than typically advised. With a clear plan in place, the lawns were established using nearly a tonne of Grass Seed, alongside carefully considered species choices tailored to the differing demands of each area.
What followed was a transformation that exceeded expectations. Despite the late sowing window, the lawns established quickly and evenly, developing into dense, resilient swards that continue to improve year on year. Today, they provide a rich, green canvas that anchors the outdoor space and enhances the overall setting.
The wider renovation project went on to gain national recognition, featuring on Channel 4’s Extraordinary Extensions, hosted by Tinie Tempah, in October 2021 – a testament to the scale, ambition and success of the build. The gardens and lawns now play a central role in that story, offering a striking contrast to the site’s once-derelict state.
The quality of the lawns has also attracted attention beyond the project itself. Segway Navimow selected the space for marketing purposes and supplied a robotic mower to help maintain its pristine finish.
For the owners, the journey has been as rewarding as the result. Through careful preparation, considered decision-making and the right support at the right time, a once-forgotten landscape has been brought firmly back to life. In many ways, this is a restoration not just of a garden, but of a much older story — the land itself having been grassland dating back to at least 1892, and likely enjoyed in a similar way long before that.

For Grass Seed Online, being part of this journey has been an absolute privilege. To contribute to the revival of such a unique and challenging site, and to see it flourish into something so impressive, is something we are immensely proud of. It stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved with the right advice, the right products, and a shared commitment to getting it right from the ground up.
