What’s really in the bag
Two grasses, two jobs
A simple blend of perennial ryegrass and red fescue.
Two grasses with complementary strengths
Perennial ryegrass establishes quickly and tolerates wear. Red fescue adds a finer leaf to this straightforward lawn mix.
More fescue for a finer finish
This mix contains more red fescue by weight than Hard Wearing. Its fine leaves add texture alongside the durable ryegrass.
Not the cheap ‘sheep grass’ other value bags hide
Some “value” seed is agricultural grass, the coarse stuff grown to feed sheep. Ours never is. Every bag is genuine amenity grass, developed for lawns and sport. Same quality, simpler blend, lower price.

Despite sowing the seed in drought conditions we managed to keep the area damp with regular watering and the results were really good. Strong healthy grass and great coverage of a big area.

As it has been so incredibly dry I have not opened the pack yet!
Excellent value for the quantity of seed supplied. Sowed in late October with fingers crossed, but the mild weather and frequent rain meant it germinated within 2 weeks. Very pleased, and I have plenty left for any patching that might be needed next spring.

I never received my order, if you look at DHL tracking the note states item at DHL depot. It’s been there a month according to their notes. DHL state they couldn’t get access to the property which is nonsense. In fairness to GrassSeedOnline they quickly refunded the costs but as long as they use DHL I will not try again.

Nearly three weeks and hardly any germination despite regular watering of the lawn
I used it to fixed some patches in my lawn. It germinated well and now the patches have completely gone.

“Isn’t cheap grass seed just poor quality?”
“If it’s the cheapest bag on the page, it must be filled out with rubbish grass.”
Often true elsewhere. A lot of “value” seed is bulked out with agricultural grass, the coarse stuff grown to feed livestock. It looks rough and never makes a proper lawn.

- Green shoots in 7–14 days. Just as fast as our premium mixes.
- A dense, fine, hard-wearing all-round lawn.
- A degree of drought and shade tolerance from the extra fescue.
Good to know
- It likes a regular mow. For a low-maintenance lawn, choose Traditional.
- A great general-purpose mix, not a specialist one.
- For boggy clay or deep shade, our targeted mixes are the better buy.
