Agricultural grass seed mixtures vary depending on the desired purpose of the mixture and length of time the grass is required to be utilised for. Forage grass mixtures can be formulated for livestock grazing, cutting for silage or sometimes a combination of the two.

Short term mixtures contain grasses that grow vigorously for s short period of time, such as Westerwolds and Italian Ryegrass. Longer term mixtures will contain mainly perennial species, such as perennial ryegrass and timothy, that will give the mixture greater longevity.

Hay is where the cut grass is left to naturally dry down to moisture levels of around 12% before being baled to be used later as animal feed. This is different to silage production where the cut grass is ensiled in clamp or baled and tightly wrapped in plastic to preserve it by preventing contact with oxygen.
