Why ‘value’ doesn’t mean cheap
The same grass. A simpler blend. A kinder price.
Value doesn’t mean leftovers. This is the same amenity grass Barenbrug develops for our premium mixes, in a simpler blend, so it costs less to buy, not less to grow.
Backed by Barenbrug
One of the world’s biggest grass-seed companies, going since 1904. The same varieties they develop for our premium mixes go into every value bag.
Amenity grass, not sheep grass
The same lawn-and-sport species we put in our premium mixes, never the cheap agricultural seed grown for grazing fields.
Where the saving comes from
A simpler two-grass blend, not lower quality. You pay less because there’s less recipe, not less grass.
Will it work in my garden?
A proper all-rounder
A great general-purpose lawn for most gardens. Here’s where it shines, honestly.

What’s really in the bag
Two grasses, two jobs
The same two grasses as our premium mixes, in a simpler blend.

The same proper lawn grasses as our premium mixes
This isn’t a different, cheaper kind of grass. It’s the same amenity ryegrass and creeping fescue we put in our top mixes. The only difference is a simpler two-grass recipe, which is why it costs less.

More fescue means a denser, finer finish
There’s actually more creeping fescue in here than in our Hard Wearing mix. That gives you an extra-dense, finer-leaved lawn, plus a degree more drought and shade tolerance into the bargain.

Not the cheap ‘sheep grass’ other value bags hide
Some “value” seed is agricultural grass, the coarse stuff grown to feed sheep. Ours never is. Every bag is genuine amenity grass, developed for lawns and sport. Same quality, simpler blend, lower price.

Customer reviews
Newer to the range, and rated 4.4
Fewer reviews than our flagship mixes so far, but the gardeners who’ve tried it keep coming back.
Let’s clear this one up
“Isn’t cheap grass seed just poor quality?”
“If it’s the cheapest bag on the page, it must be filled out with rubbish grass.”
Often true elsewhere. A lot of “value” seed is bulked out with agricultural grass, the coarse stuff grown to feed livestock. It looks rough and never makes a proper lawn.
Same amenity grass as our premium mixes. The price is the recipe, not the quality.
Our value mix is genuine ryegrass and creeping fescue, developed for lawns and sport. Exactly what’s in our dearer bags. You save because it’s a simpler two-grass blend, not because the grass is cheaper.
No surprises
What to expect, and who it’s not for
A genuinely great all-rounder. Here’s the honest picture.
What to expect
- Green shoots in 7–14 days. Just as fast as our premium mixes.
- A dense, fine, hard-wearing all-round lawn.
- A degree of drought and shade tolerance from the extra fescue.
Good to know
- It likes a regular mow. For a low-maintenance lawn, choose Traditional.
- A great general-purpose mix, not a specialist one.
- For boggy clay or deep shade, our targeted mixes are the better buy.
